This week marks the 13th annual Farm Safety Week, led by the Farm Safety Foundation (Yellow Wellies).

At CWP we’re proud to stand alongside the agricultural industry to shine a spotlight on something that matters to all of us: safety.

It’s a chance to pause and reflect on a simple question:

Would you leave your safety to luck?

Agriculture: high risk, high responsibility

Farming represents just 1% of the UK workforce, yet it accounts for a shocking 16% of all workplace fatalities.

In the last year alone, 23 farm workers and 4 members of the public, including two children, tragically lost their lives in farm-related incidents, many of which could have been prevented.

These aren’t just numbers. They’re reminders of why safety must remain a top priority on every site, every day.

Why safety still needs a spotlight

Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, risky behaviour continues to be far too common on farms and construction sites alike. A 2023 survey revealed:

  • 1 in 5 farm workers admit they would take a safety risk to get a job done
  • 1 in 3 say they wouldn’t stop to carry out a risk assessment before starting work

At CWP, where our products often play a main role in agricultural builds, we work closely with clients and contractors to support safe working practices, from design to delivery and installation.

Whether it’s moving heavy precast units, operating machinery, or working at height, the risks are real and the consequences can be devastating.

It’s more than just PPE

This year’s campaign goes beyond the obvious. It’s about recognising the everyday risks we sometimes overlook:

Take 5 to stay alive

Before starting any task, take a moment to ask yourself:

  • Do I have the right tools and PPE?
  • What could go wrong?
  • Am I confident and trained to do this safely?
  • Is there a safer or better way to approach it?
  • Have I taken the time to think and plan?

STOP. THINK. PLAN.
Taking five minutes could save a life. Maybe your own.

Creating a safer culture

It’s time to move away from the old mindset of “it won’t happen to me.”

At CWP, we believe safety isn’t just about policies or paperwork. It’s about making sure everyone gets home safe at the end of the day.

Here’s how we can all make a difference:

  • Speak up about safety concerns
  • Report near misses as they’re warning signs we can learn from
  • Make PPE accessible and lead by example by wearing it
  • Support less experienced team members on site
  • Stay in touch when working alone or remotely

Let’s lead by example

Farm Safety Week is a powerful reminder that serious incidents often don’t result from broken equipment. They happen when we’re rushing, distracted, or tempted to take shortcuts.

We’re committed to building not only durable products, but also a safer working environment for everyone involved—on farms, construction sites, and beyond.

Because safety isn’t about luck. It’s about action.
